The highlight of our Port Townsend weekend was the Puffin Tour to Protection Island in the Staits of Juan de Fuca. Above, a pair of puffins! The island is a nationally protected nesting area for seabirds, and contains the last nesting population of tufted puffins in Washington.
The spit of Protection Island, with the Olympic Mountains beyond. The beach is littered with eagles and seals!
View from the front of the boat, the Glacier Spirit.
Cormorants nest high on the sandy bluffs. (the little black dots)
Leaving the island behind, looking west out the Straits, with the Olympic peninsula to the south (left).
The sunset.
