It's wet and rainy but warm today, the calm after the storm (and before the next one). I found this old nest on the forest floor, when I went out to survey the storm damage. It must have fallen out of it's tree, and from the number of droppings in it, something else was using it - recycled housing! Nests are an amazing example of structure - this one is intricately woven of tiny twigs or roots, and survived the fall intact. It is flexible, but doesn't pull apart. As a basketmaker, I am awed by the instinct to create nests.
We did have a good number of small to medium sized trees either down, or leaning, and lots of branches down. It's part of the cycle of nature, and provides shelter and compost for the life of the forest.
